Microsoft rewards Windows Insiders with exclusive wallpapers, reveals more stats as well| for sock rom go to rompure.com

With the free Windows 10 upgrade offer now expired after exactly one year as Microsoft promised, the company is looking to reward members who enrolled in its Insider Program. In a new email sent out to Insiders today, the Redmond giant has thanked members with exclusive wallpapers and more, along with a couple of other statistics - in addition to those revealed yesterday.

Windows10-Anniversary-Ninjacat-1

The email from the company reads as follows:
Over the last year, Windows Insiders like you have continued to help make Windows 10 even more amazing. Today, we celebrate the one-year anniversary by celebrating you, our Insiders. Thanks to your feedback, Windows is the best it can be — and getting better every day.
Apart from this, the company has also shared some interesting stats about its Windows Insider Program. Microsoft states that over 8.6 million pieces of feedback were submitted by Insiders since the launch of Windows 10. In a separate tweet by the official @Windows Twitter account, the company also notes that more than 7 million users are enrolled in its Windows 10 Insider Program - a figure Microsoft apparently hasn't improved upon since it was announced back in September 2015.
Microsoft has also stated that Insiders spent a total of 443 million hours on Windows 10. Keeping in mind that there are roughly 7 million Insiders, this can be calculated to almost 63 hours utilized by each user on average. Additionally, the company also announced that the Program is now available in 30 languages.
In order to celebrate the first anniversary of Windows 10 as well as its Insiders, Microsoft is rewarding its users with an exclusive wallpaper package, an animated Ninja Cat GIF and an "Insider Program badge", which the company states will be visible on your profile in the Feedback Hub in a few days. Microsoft plans to rollout out Redstone 2 Insider builds to Insiders in August.

The Superbook Android laptop has passed $1 million in Kickstarter funding| for sock rom go to rompure.com

We're careful about covering hardware Kickstarters because so many of them fail to deliver. The Superbook laptop dockfirst popped up a few months ago, then it hit Kickstarter last week. Whether or not this device lives up to the hype, there's enough hype that you should probably be aware of it. The Superbook has already pulled in more than a million dollars, and there are still a few more weeks left in the campaign.
The Superbook is basically just a giant battery, a keyboard, trackpad, and a screen assembled in a package that looks like a laptop. It relies on your phone to provide all the computing power over a USB cable. The Superbook comes from Andromium, which has already made an app and a phone dock that work like the Superbook, but without the built-in laptop hardware. It seems like the app, which you can install and play around with right now, is basically running an alternative interface on your phone, which is then mirrored on the Superbook screen.

The Superbook starts at $99 (all the early bird deals are gone) and has already hit several stretch goals including an extra USB port and increased battery size. There's also a new 1080p display upgrade option. With three weeks left, Andromium is going to have plenty of money to work with. Hopefully this is one of those hardware crowdfunding campaigns that works out.

OnePlus releases Dash Charge kernel code to enable custom ROM support| for sock rom go to rompure.com

The OnePlus 3 has fast charging tech called Dash Charge, a first for the company. However, the necessary code for third-party ROMs and kernels to support Dash Charge simply didn't exist at launch. OP said it would release the necessary code by the end of July, and lo and behold, here it is right on time.
Dash Charge is a licensed version of VOOC from Oppo. The OnePlus 3 is the first phone available widely outside of Asia to support this standard. It requires code on the phone and hardware in the adapter to work, but now developers have access to the code necessary to keep Dash Charge working with custom software. The hardware will still be a limitation, though. You can only get Dash Charge cables and adapters from OnePlus right now. There are no plans to expand that to third-parties.
Developers who want to start playing around with Dash Charging in their projects should resync their Git Hub repositories. The charging-related changes are found in the following repositories.

Enable the Hidden 'Night Mode' Setting on Android 7.0 Nougat| for sock rom go to rompure.com

When Google released the first Developer Preview build of Android 7.0 Nougat, users were happy to see that a new "Night Mode" was included among the changes. The feature would cancel out any blue light emitted from your screen to help you get to sleep a bit earlier, quite similar to f.lux for desktop computers, or Apple's Night Shift for iPhones. It could be set to turn on automatically based on time of day, or you could manually enable Night Mode with a Quick Settings toggle.

However, this feature didn't make it into the final build of Android Nougat for some reason, and it wasn't even buried in the System UI Tuner. Luckily, all of the main code for Night Mode was still there—it's just that it was hidden away.

So developer Michael Evans started investigating, and eventually found the hidden code. Once he did that, he created an app to activate the dormant Night Mode setting in all its glory. As a result, we can now get a blue-cancelling screen filter on Android Nougat, and the best part is, this doesn't even require root.

Enable System UI Tuner

First up, you'll need to enable the hidden System UI Tuner menu on your device. To do that, swipe down twice from the top of your screen to fully expand the Quick Settings menu. From here, press and hold the little gear icon in the top-right corner, then let go after about 10 seconds. You'll be taken directly to your Settings menu, where you'll see a toast message that says "Congrats! System UI Tuner has been added to Settings."
If you'd like some more help with this part, including troubleshooting tips, make sure to check out our full System UI Tuner tutorial at the link below.

Install Night Mode Enabler

The app that enables Night Mode on Nougat is fittingly called Night Mode Enabler, and now that you've enabled the System UI Tuner, you're ready to install it.

Enable Night Mode

Next, just open Night Mode Enabler, then tap the lone button in the middle of the screen. From here, you'll be taken to the hidden Night Mode settings menu in Android's System UI Tuner. Make sure that you enable the "On" switch at the top of the screen here, and if you'd like, you can adjust other Night Mode settings while you're at it.

Add the Night Mode Quick Settings Tile (Optional)

With its default settings, Night Mode will automatically kick in at sundown in your location, then the blue-cancelling effect will continue to get stronger as it gets darker outside. But if you'd like to have a manual override switch to enable or disable Night Mode whenever you want, you can add a Quick Settings tile for this.
To start, swipe down twice from the top of your screen to fully expand the Quick Settings menu. From here, tap the "Edit" button, then scroll down to the bottom of the list to find the Night Mode toggle. Next, just long-press the toggle, then drag it up to the dark gray area at the top of this menu and drop it into place. From now on, you'll be able to tap this toggle to turn Night Mode on or off, irrespective of the automatic settings.

How Night Mode Looks

Whether you enable it manually, or allow the feature to kick in by itself, Night Mode will make your screen appear slightly orange when it's active. This is because it's cancelling any blue light being emitted from your phone's display, as studies have shown that light frequencies in this spectrum can interrupt your circadian rhythm if viewed after sundown.

Troubleshooting

Some users have reported that they can't seem to add the Quick Settings toggle for Night Mode. If this ends up happening, the best workaround is to reset your Quick Settings toggles, then add the Night Mode switch again. To do that, just head to the "Edit" menu in Quick Settings, then tap the three-dot menu button in the top-right corner and choose "Reset." It's a minor bug, and possibly why Google left the feature out to begin with, but it's a small price to pay to get this awesome functionality.

Samsung posts big profit for Q2 2016, largest in over two years| for sock rom go to rompure.com

Bolstered by surging sales of the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, Samsung has announced its second quarter earnings for 2016, showing that profits, 8.14 trillion won ($45.2 billion), are up almost 18%, with revenue, 50.94 trillion won ($7.22 billion), also up by 5%.
These are big, big increases for Samsung - the biggest profit the South Korean company has made in over two years. This is no doubt thanks to, at least in part, a hugely profitable IT & Mobile Communications division, which has the smartphone department as part of that. Profit for the IM division was 4.32 trillion won ($3.83 billion).
Samsung also notes that the component business, manufacturing chips and displays, also saw solid performance, although profit was down 0.3 trillion won ($266 million) due to declines in the industry.
Because Galaxy S7 and S7 edge sales have been so encouraging, Samsung must be hoping for a good third quarter, saying "the release of a new large-screen flagship smartphone will help to maintain solid sales of high-end smartphones led by the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge." This, of course, is the Samsung Galaxy Note 7, which is scheduled for launch on Tuesday August 2nd.

Update All Your App Icons to Material Design for a More Unified Home Screen| for sock rom go to rompure.com

Google's Material Design guidelines have finally brought some consistency to the look and feel of Android apps, bringing most of the user experience on par with what you would see on iOS. However, some developers are still using non-compliant home screen icons, even though Material Design calls for specific padding, size, and layouts.

Icons that don't adhere to Material Design standards will stand out as larger or smaller than the rest of the icons on your home screen, and if you're meticulous about the way things look, this can be really annoying. When compared to the identical, square-with-rounded-corners look that Apple apps use across the board, this is one area where Android still lags behind.

But unlike iOS, Android allows for custom home screen icons, so inconsistently-sized icons can easily be replaced. And now, thanks to a new app from developer Oxo, we can create consistent Material Design icons in as little as one tap. Your creations can be used as a makeshift icon pack with a custom launcher, or the app can add them directly to your stock home screen, so this is one that anyone can use.

Install Materialize

To get started, the first thing you'll need to do is install the app, which is called Materialize.

Create Your Own Home Screen Icons

When you launch Materialize, you'll see a list containing most of your installed apps. The only exceptions here are Google's apps, which already use Material Design anyway, and your pre-installed system apps, which should be using Material Design. If they aren't, you can create a custom Material Design icon by simply tapping the menu button at the top of the screen, then enable "Show system apps."

Next up, just select the app whose icon you'd like to theme, then Materialize will automatically generate a square Material Design icon. If you wanted to, you could just tap "Add to Home" on this screen, and you would have created a Material Design icon in one tap.
However, this menu gives you the option to theme the icon a bit more. For starters, you can change the shape by picking one of the templates towards the top of the screen, and you can adjust the icon's padding with the slider beneath that. Then, if there's any empty space left over, you can have Materialize "Auto fill" the area by matching the icon's primary color, or you can simply fill it in with "White."

Once you're satisfied with the way your icon looks, you've got two options for adding it to your home screen. First, you can tap the three-dot menu button at the bottom of the screen, then choose "Export to gallery" to save the icon as an image that can be loaded into most custom launchers. Or, you can add the icon directly to your home screen with the "Add to Home" button at the bottom of the screen.

Enjoy Consistent Material Design Icons

At this point, you'll see your Material Design compliant icon on your home screen. One of the best parts about this is that it ensures consistent size and padding with all of your home screen icons. Take the Netflix icon for example (pictured below)—it's normally a lot bigger than app icons that actually follow Material Design standards, but once you've "Materialized" it, it will match perfectly and your icon rows will look tighter.

Android app design has definitely come a long way, but these icon size discrepancies demonstrate that they're still lagging behind their iOS counterparts. Nonetheless, Android's strengths in the customization category allow you to fix these issues easily, and Materialize is a great example of this.

WhatsApp Is Now Sharing Your Data with Facebook, but Opting Out Doesn't Solve the Problem| for sock rom go to rompure.com

When Facebook purchased WhatsApp for $19.3 billion back in 2014, we all knew this was coming—it just took longer than we thought. But starting today, the data mining became official, and now, information from your favorite messaging app is no longer out of reach for the world's biggest social media site.
Once you have accepted our updated Terms and Privacy Policy, we will share some of your account information with Facebook and the Facebook family of companies, like the phone number you verified when you registered with WhatsApp, as well as the last time you used our service.
The policy change comes in the form of an updated Terms of Service, which you'll be prompted to accept in the coming days. But all signs are pointing towards Facebook and WhatsApp becoming intertwined like never before.
By connecting your phone number with Facebook's systems, Facebook can offer better friend suggestions and show you more relevant ads if you have an account with them.
Facebook makes its money through targeted ads, so it only makes sense that they'll be using WhatsApp data to recoup the monetary losses from that near-$20 billion purchase. They clearly state that the actual contents of your messages are off limits, but your contact info and personal phone number are fair game. This identifying information has significant value to advertisers, as it helps make ads more effective by targeting you with specific products and services.
WhatsApp posted instructions for disabling these new data mining "features," but the fine print makes it clear that your phone number and contact information will still be used by Facebook—just not for targeted ads.
The Facebook family of companies will still receive and use this information for other purposes such as improving infrastructure and delivery systems.

Ultimately, this means that if you're a WhatsApp user, Facebook will now know your phone number and other bits of information from your WhatsApp contacts list, and there's nothing you can do about it short of ditching WhatsApp.

With features like end-to-end encryption, WhatsApp has always appealed to privacy-minded users, but this era is now officially over. Are you jumping ship to another messaging platform? Do you know of a better option? Let us know in the comment section below.

Lifestage is Facebook's teen-only video profile app| for sock rom go to rompure.com

While Facebook has around 1.7 billion users worldwide, not that many of these are teenagers, with most 13-19 year olds preferring Snapchat or Instagram (for, in my mind, obvious reasons). In an attempt to combat this, Facebook released Lifestage for iOS devices back in August, and now the Android app has just arrived.
Lifestage encourages users to upload pictures and videos based on their likes, dislikes, or feelings. These are then turned into video profiles which others can see. There is no privacy whatsoever on Lifestage - everything is public. Facebook is aiming the app at school communities - once a school has more than 20 users, other profiles are visible. For people older than 21, they can only see their own profile.
screenshot_20161026-121939 screenshot_20161026-121927
In my brief play with the app, it seems like a fun idea, but with the market already saturated with similar apps, I am unsure if it'll take off. Lifestage was designed by a 19 year old product manager at Facebook, so presumably he knows what teenagers want. Maybe. It has a cartoony, fun aesthetic, with lots of things to add - 'Music,' 'People,' 'Food,' among other things. For all these you can add videos or pictures, which other users in your school can then see.
screenshot_20161026-121957 screenshot_20161026-122016
While it seems like a well built app, the privacy settings, or lack of, seem a little extreme. Lifestage is only available to users in the US on Google Play, although we've got it on APK Mirror should others from around the world wish to check it out.

Titanium Backup 7.5 adds Android N support and introduces secure MyTiCloud backup early bird| for sock rom go to rompure.com

Titanium Backup still looks like it was stuffed in a time capsule in 2011 and never gotten out of it, but who cares. The app provides backup and restore features that make the lives of every root and custom ROM user several folds easier, and that's just the tip of the iceberg of its capabilities. And it's not like it's been abandoned: the developers keep updating it and today it's reached version 7.5.
With this release, Titanium Backup is adding Android N support so you can finally use the app if you're running the latest dev preview. But it's also introducing a new feature: MyTi.cloud backups.MyTi.cloud is not ready yet — the developers are aiming for an early 2017 launch date — but you can sign up now for the cloud and benefit from early bird pricing: 10GB for CHF 12, 20GB for CHF 23, 50GB for CHF 51, and 100GB for CHF 96. The rates between CHF and USD are almost equal so you can look at those numbers as their equivalent in dollars.
But what is MyTi.cloud? It's a secure cloud storage with servers located in Switzerland — hence the CHF prices — that is under the protection of the Swiss legal framework and its Federal Act on Data Protection. It should thus be safe, private, inaccessible by anyone but you, and with no ads or tracking. You can read more about MyTi.cloud at the source links below.
Both users of Titanium Backup free and pro can subscribe to the early bird now and get a free one-year extension to their contract. Non early bird prices haven't been disclosed, but they should, logically, be more expensive than this.
WHAT'S NEW
• Added support for MyTi.cloud in TB Free & PRO — check out our Early Bird offers before it launches!
• Added support for Android 7.0 Nougat Developer Preview 5 (NPD90G).
• Added a "Configure cloud storage" button to the Schedules view.
• Updated translations.
